Merry E. Sebelik, MD, FACS, MAMSE is a Professor of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at Emory University, serving in the Division of Head & Neck Surgery with Winship Cancer Institute, and as Emory’s director of Endocrine Head & Neck Surgery fellowship training.
She received her medical degree and OTO-HNS training at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and fellowship training in Head & Neck Surgical Oncology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
Dr. Sebelik's clinical practice has an emphasis on endocrine surgery of the head and neck which is reflected in the achievement of Focused Practice Designation for Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery in 2025. She incorporates surgeon-performed ultrasound into staging, treatment planning and perioperative surgical assessment of many of her patients. Further, she utilizes ultrasound guidance for office-based thyroid interventions, expanding treatment options for people with symptomatic thyroid nodules.
She is an internationally recognized Head & Neck Ultrasound Instructor and participates as a didactic and practical instructor in post-graduate courses at AHNS, ASHA, ACS, ATA, and AAO-HNS meetings, as well as a variety of international venues from Denmark to Zimbabwe.
Dr. Sebelik has over a 25-year career collaborating with otolaryngology colleagues and trainees in low- and middle-income countries. She is a faculty member in the Emory University Global Health Institute and is affiliated with NGOs serving the underserved in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Philippines and other international sites. Because of her longstanding dedication to global surgical deficits and education, Dr. Sebelik was granted the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery Distinguished Humanitarian Award for 2020, and elected to the prestigious Academy of Master Surgeon Educators in 2021.
