Cecelia E. Schmalbach MD, MSc, FACS is the David Myers MD Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University where she also serves as the Director of the Temple Head & Neck Institute and Chief of Head & Neck Surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center. She earned her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. After finishing otolaryngology residency at the University of Michigan—during which she earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research Design & Statistics— she completed her head and neck (H&N)-microvascular surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Schmalbach previously served as the Indiana University Vice Chair of Otolaryngology and H&N Surgery Division Chief. She is the former otolaryngology program director at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and served eight years active duty in the U.S. Air Force at the San Antonio Military Medical Center where she was Director of Research, Chief Ombudsman and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). She held faculty appointments in Plastic Surgery & Otolaryngology at the University of Texas San Antonio during that time.
Dr. Schmalbach is recognized for her expertise in head & neck cutaneous cancers and has extensive experience in endocrine surgery, mucosal neoplasms and facial trauma. Her scientific contributions include research in sentinel node biopsy, advanced skin cancer & patient safety/quality improvement. She is Editor-in-Chief for Otolaryngology-HNS and OTO Open, was the national Coordinator of Research & Quality for the American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO-HNS/F), and Chair of the Skin Cancer/Melanoma Section for the American Head and Neck Society. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and recipient of numerous awards including: the AAO-HNS/F Distinguished Service Award, AAO-HNS/F Cochrane Scholar Award, United States Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and NATO Medal.
