Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping otolaryngology research and scientific publishing, offering powerful tools while introducing new methodological and ethical challenges. This panel of journal experts provides a practical, principled framework for integrating AI into otolaryngology research, writing and peer review. Key AI categories will be defined. Essential elements of rigorous AI research will be highlighted, along with common fatal flaws. Lastly, ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in research, peer review, and scientific publishing will be discussed. Ultimately, this panel aims to equip clinicians, researchers, and editors with the knowledge needed to apply AI thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively in advancing our field of otolaryngology.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define artificial intelligence (AI) categories such as deep learning, machine learning, and large language models along with associated applications in otolaryngology research
  • Identify key components of sound AI research methodology along with associated fatal flaws in study design
  • Discuss ethical considerations in utilizing AI in research, peer review, and scientific publishing
