Off the Traditional Track: Alternative Careers in Otolaryngology

Attendees can learn about how this panel of otolaryngologists developed a non traditional career pathways in addition to clinical and academic practices, including a successful podcast (BackTable ENT), a locum tenens business specific for otolaryngologists, a career mentoring business, and online consulting. Panelists additionally have experience in living abroad while maintaining a part time clinical practice, locum tenens work, private practice, and prn otolaryngology hospitalist work schedule. Topics of discussion will include how to develop a non-traditional professional idea and business model, how to balance this with clinical and academic goals, and how to pursue non-traditional career options at all career phases (early, mid, and late).

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participant will be able to discuss career opportunities otolaryngologists have pursued that go beyond the traditional clinical and academic pathways.
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to identify steps to embark on entrepreneurial ENT career paths, including starting a podcast, building a mentoring business, founding an ENT locum tenens company, and negotiating for non-traditional otolaryngology schedules and roles.
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to discuss how to develop a plan to expand upon current clinical practice to build additional otolaryngology opportunities and infrastructure into our changing medical system.
