(1101) Effectiveness of Short ENT Teaching Video Across Learner Experience Levels

Introduction: Short-format educational videos are increasingly incorporated in medical education, yet their effectiveness across varying levels of prior clinical experience remains unknown. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a video on complications of otitis media among learners with differing levels of otolaryngology exposure.

Methods: A brief 7-minute educational video on complications of otitis media was developed and presented to participants (2023-2025). Learners (N=49), ranging from first-year medical students to otolaryngology residents, completed a multiple-choice knowledge assessment (11-points), before and after viewing the video. Learners were stratified by prior otolaryngology exposure: experienced learners consisted of fourth-year medical students to PGY-5 residents (Group 1, N=9) and first-year medical students (Group 2, N=40).

Results: Group 1 demonstrated significantly higher baseline proficiency (mean score 49.5%) than Group 2 (mean score 26.2%). Both groups improved significantly following the intervention. Group 1 demonstrated a mean score increase of 4.12 points, achieving a post-test mean of 9.56 (86.9%) (p=.004) with no score regressions. Group 2 demonstrated a more modest mean increase of 2.22 points, reaching a post-test mean of 5.10 (46.3%) (p <.001), with greater variability, including score regression in some learners.

Conclusions: While brief video instruction can enhance learning across training levels, its educational impact is strongly influenced by learners’ prior knowledge. These findings highlight that short videos should be strategically embedded into a more structured curriculum, particularly for novice learners.
