Richard W Waguespack, MD, is a part time otolaryngologist at the Birmingham VA Medical Center and works with the UAB residents rotating there. He transitioned in early 2013 from over 30 years in private practice to the VA and UAB, retiring full time from UAB in June 2020 and returning to part time practice there Nov 2022-Oct 2024.
He served as the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) CPT Advisor from 1999 through 2004 and continued (2009-2023] in this capacity (or as the Alternate) for the Triological Society. Wag was awarded the Burgess Gordon Award in 2012 and again in 2021 by AMA CPT. A member of the AMA CPT Editorial Panel from 2004-2008, he rotated off the CPT Assistant Editorial Board in May 2021. Other positions include chairing the AAO-HNS CPT and Relative Value Committee (1999-2009), serving as its Coordinator for Socioeconomic Affairs (2008-2012), and as president of the Academy (2013-2014) and Board of Governors (BOG) Chair about 10 years prior.
Dr. Waguespack has given numerous courses and presentations on coding, health policy, and practice management (and now on retirement) at AAO-HNS annual meetings and in other venues, including past annual AMA CPT/RBRVS update symposia. He worked on the Academy's mentoring program for medical students who are interested in pursuing a career in otolaryngology.
