UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, United States
Dr. Phan is a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, specializing in head and neck cancer treatment. He is the Director of H&N Stereotactic Radiotherapy and Director of H&N Clinical Research.
He completed his M.D. and Ph.D. at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. His graduate and post-doctoral work focused on genetics of obesity, lipid and energy metabolism. His clinical expertise is treating patients with H&N and skull base malignancies using highly conformal techniques such stereotactic radiotherapy, proton therapy, and image guided radiation therapy.
He is PI of HYDRA (stereotactic ablative radiotherapy for larynx cancer) funded by CPRIT, and SOAR (phase 2 randomized clinical trial comparing SBRT versus conventionally fractionated radiotherapy for unresectable head and neck cancer recurrence). He leads a long-term prospective registry on H&N reirradiation funded by the MD Anderson Clinical Innovator Award as an inaugural year recipient.
He developed and established the first H&N stereotactic radiation therapy program, at UT M.D Anderson Cancer Center, that provides a clinical and research pathway for patients with recurrent H&N and skull base malignancies. In April 2022, this program has treated its 500th SBRT patient.
