Dysphagia Cases That Are Hard to Swallow: Simplifying the Workup and Management

This case-based panel presentation will introduce the audience to challenging dysphagia cases that will be simplified by sharing pearls related to history taking, exam findings, tips on proper fluoroscopic swallow study selection, how to collaborate effectively with speech language pathology, and indications for surgical intervention. Panelists are all fellowship trained laryngologists that specialize in dysphagia yet have varying practice environments, from community to academic practice. We will touch on the complexities related to post radiation dysphagia, dysphagia in an aging population, pharyngoesophageal findings and role of surgical intervention, and the role of swallow therapy. This session will help to simplify the workup and management of difficult dysphagia cases.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key features in the history and laryngoscopy exam that help differentiate esophageal from oropharyngeal dysphagia.
  • Determine the next best diagnostic test for oropharyngeal versus esophageal dysphagia taking into account patient complaints and comorbidities.
  • Interpret key findings from fluoroscopic exams and how these findings can help decision making regarding options for therapy, diet modifications, UES surgical intervention, and medical management.
