This symposium incorporates global perspectives on skull base osteomyelitis, reflecting regional differences in microbiology, antifungal prevalence, imaging access, and healthcare infrastructure. Emphasis is placed on adaptable management strategies, including outpatient intravenous therapy, adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and context-sensitive surgical decision-making in both resource-rich and resource-limited settings.
Early recognition of progression patterns, appropriate use of advanced imaging, and timely referral or intervention can significantly alter outcomes. This symposium equips general and subspecialty ENT physicians with practical, decision-oriented frameworks applicable to real-world practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify clinical, radiologic, and laboratory indicators signaling progression from lateral to central skull base osteomyelitis and recognize patterns associated with poor response to medical therapy alone.
  • Evaluate decision-making dilemmas in skull base osteomyelitis, including when to escalate treatment, pursue biopsy or debridement, and interpret persistent imaging abnormalities despite clinical improvement.
  • Compare contemporary treatment strategies for SBO , including advanced imaging-guided decision-making, pathogen-directed antimicrobial regimens, adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and outcomes following medical versus combined medical–surgical approaches.
