Professor Dr. Olivier M. Vanderveken MD, PhD, is an ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon at the Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium, being Chair of the Department. He is also appointed as Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Antwerp. Professor Vanderveken is the Head of the Spearpoint Neurosciences. Professor Vanderveken is also appointed as Chair and Full Professor at the UZ Brussels affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at VUB University in Brussels. At the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, Olivier Vanderveken is appointed as Adjunct Assistant Professor.
Prof Vanderveken received his medical degree from University of Antwerp in 2001. He completed an ENT-HNS residency at the Antwerp University Hospitals. In 2007, he obtained a PhD in Medical Sciences on the topic of the fundamental and multidisciplinary approach to upper airway collapse during sleep-disordered breathing.
His main research is in the area of sleep-disordered breathing, in particular pathophysiological assessment of upper airway collapse including phenotyping, drug-induced sleep endoscopy, treatment of sleep apnea with mandibular advancement devices and upper airway surgery including hypoglossal nerve stimulation and transoral robotic surgery.
Prof Vanderveken has co-authored several scientific publications in high-impact peer reviewed journals. Olivier Vanderveken has been awarded several national and international scientific awards including the “AADSM Clinical Research Award” & “AADSM Clinical Excellence Award” in 2011, and “Pierre Robin Academic Award” in 2012.
Professor Vanderveken is the Deputy Editor of the ‘Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine’ and Editor in Chief of the journal B-ENT, the official publication of the Royal Belgian Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery.
Olivier Vanderveken holds a Senior Clinical Investigator Fellowship at the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) in Belgium (2016-2031) supporting him to pursue a full-fledged career in translational research.
