Medical Student
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
My name is Spencer Johnson and I'm an M4 at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. I'm hoping to pursue a career in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, and have spent much of my time throughout medical school conducting research in laryngology. As a singer and musician, I'm especially interested in researching how voice-based audio signals can be used as biomarkers to screen for vocal pathologies. This research has led me to develop several machine learning models that can accurately differentiate pathological vs non-pathological voices, including one that I'll be presenting this year at AAO-HNSF. While further research, including external validation with diverse patient populations, is much needed before these models can be deployed in the clinical setting, I believe that voice-based diagnostics is one area in which machine learning can be leveraged to make screening and vocal care more accessible for patients across the globe.
Beyond studying and research, I spend my time playing soccer, salsa dancing, and making music. I'm very grateful for the oppotunity to present my research at this years conference, and want to thank my mentors, Dr Kirke (Sinai), Dr Nadkarni (Sinai), and Dr Valdez (Stanford), as well as Mount Sinai's Discovery and Innovation Hub (DIH) for their support in making this work come to fruition.
