Mr
Henry Ford Health System/Wayne State University School of Medicine
I am Sospeter Machani, BS, a third year medical student at Wayne State University School of Medicine with a strong interest in otolaryngology. I am originally from Arlington, Texas, and was born to Kenyan parents. I completed my undergraduate education at Louisiana Tech University, where I built a strong foundation in the sciences before beginning medical school.
My interest in otolaryngology began through personal experience. As a child, I dealt with orbital cellulitis and chronic sinusitis, which required multiple surgeries and introduced me to the meaningful impact that a skilled physicians can have on a patient’s life. These early experiences helped guide my decision to pursue medicine and later strengthened my interest in otolaryngology, particularly because of the field’s combination of anatomy, procedural care, and longitudinal patient relationships.
Before medical school, I worked as a clinical assistant at Fort Worth ENT, where I gained hands-on experience in patient care, clinic workflow, and in-office procedures such as balloon sinuplasty and tympanoplasty. Through this role, I also had the opportunity to observe physicians in the operating room, which deepened my appreciation for the technical, collaborative, and patient-centered aspects of otolaryngology.
During medical school, I have continued to explore the specialty through shadowing, research, and professional development opportunities. I have attended national meetings, including the OTO Expo and the Triological Society meeting, where I connected with residents and faculty and gained a broader understanding of the field. As I continue through my clinical training, I am committed to developing the knowledge, skills, and mentorship necessary to pursue a career in otolaryngology and to care for patients with the same compassion that first inspired me to enter medicine.
