Edward G. Tannenbaum is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, where he is pursuing Distinction Tracks in Research and Service. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Columbia University and completed a post-baccalaureate premedical program at Northeastern University prior to medical school.
His research focuses on otolaryngology, with particular interests in salivary gland disease. Under the mentorship of Dr. Henry T. Hoffman at the University of Iowa Department of Otolaryngology, he has served as principal investigator on studies evaluating surgical outcomes and imaging predictors in sialolithiasis, as well as investigations of eosinophilic sialodochitis. His scholarly work has resulted in peer-reviewed publications, national presentations, and manuscripts currently under review.
Beyond otolaryngology, Mr. Tannenbaum has conducted research in pediatric gastroenterology and dermatology, including projects assessing dermatologic healthcare access among migrant and seasonal farmworkers. His contributions have been recognized through multiple grants and awards, including the Iowa Head and Neck Protocols Award for Best Edits and the Carver College of Medicine Student Research Fellowship.
Mr. Tannenbaum serves as Chair of Media and Outreach for Headmirror’s National Otolaryngology Interest Group and previously served as Chair of Community Outreach for the University of Iowa Otolaryngology Interest Group. He is also actively involved in community service through the University of Iowa Mobile Clinic and local organizations serving underserved populations.
He intends to pursue residency training and a career in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery.
